600 million again
Guess what Leontxo reckons? Or at least, what he reckoned on Saturday.
Yes, it's that 600 million figure again!
In English:
Also because it's an obviously ridiculous claim. But mainly because I asked the pollsters.
Anyway, on Sunday, after letting Leontxo know...
...I received a kind reply...
...but while it's very good of him to say so, wouldn't it be better to do the research first, before repeating any old manifestly-dubious statistic that looks like it might be good propaganda for chess?

According to polls, around six hundred million people in the world play chess. The polls, of course, don't say any such thing. I know this because I asked the pollsters.

41 Attend NJ All-Girls Chess Camp
Dear Jim,
Thank you for helping post the message and the flyer on your blog. The NJ All-Girls Chess Camp was a great success, with 41 girls from 9 counties in New Jersey.
Maryia Oreshko, Angelica Chin, and I were happy to meet these wonderful girls and introduce them to the wonderland of chess. Together, we had lots of fun in two days. Thanks to the help of the NJSCF, every girl took home a chess set so she can continue playing chess at home.
You can find more information and photos at:
https://www.facebook.com/gcnj2014
http://gcnj2014.weebly.com/
There is also an article on the USCF website that nicely covers the camp: http://www.uschess.org/content/view/12860/788/
I am planning one or more small follow-up activities for the more than 60 girls on the waiting list, and the camp for next year. Then I will need your help again.
Thank you again!

National Championship of Rwanda sets for November 29
Rwanda: Chess Championship Set for November 29
By James Karuhanga
The local chess federation is set to revive the long forgotten annual national championship competition. Chess enthusiasts will next week start tousling it out to determine this year's national champion.
According to the Rwanda Chess Federation, the preliminary knock out phase will be played by unrated players [those who have never played in the Chess Olympiad, a biennial chess tournament in which teams from all over the world compete] starting the week-end of November 29.
"From this phase we will select 10 players who will join the rated players in the final phase," Kevin Ganza, the Vice-President of the Rwanda Chess Federation said.
The winners from this phase will qualify to compete in the finals which start on December 26. Registration for the knock out phase is underway and ends November 25, four days before the games begin.
The chess federation has not held such events in 10 years.
Ganza said: "The objective is to find out who is playing a better game than others this year, and encourage players to keep improving their game."
Winners of previous open competitions have been reported as national champions but, according to Ganza, that is not the proper way of doing things because the competitions were not organised the way a national championship should be.

The Anand camp stayed upbeat though
Agencies
Sochi, November 20, 2014

Viswanathan Anand may be digging into some excellent pizzas, pastas and some exotic sushi along with Russian food during his stay in Sochi, but down by a point with just four games to go, the five-time world champion is in a now-or-never situation in the World Chess Championship match against Magnus Carlsen.
With the scores favouring Carlsen 4.5-3.5 after eight games, Anand is now under serious pressure to score at least one victory, and if that does not happen in the next two games, it might be already too late.
Ahead of the ninth game on Thursday, it is not only the match situation which is a worrying factor for Anand but also Carlsen's preparation.
The Indian ace had come up with a fine new idea to win the third game but since then Carlsen seems to have caught the 'preparation bug' too.
The Norwegian is blitzing out the opening moves in quick time as well as producing new ideas, something that was considered Anand's forte.
The Anand camp stayed upbeat though. "We had been hoping that Anand plays the chess we know he can. He has in his own silent way, reinvented his chess," Anand's wife and manager Aruna said.
"(During his time in Sochi) Anand has been visiting the gymnasium daily and he prefers to walk along the beach after working on chess. He listens to music, avoids newspapers and television. The Economist is the only thing he reads," Aruna added.
For Anand, it would be best to go for the kill at the earliest. The time to think about being white or black should not matter anymore and all the Indian ace should be thinking about is to complicate the position as soon as possible.
In the ninth game on Thursday, Anand will be playing black. If there is a twist in this world championship, it looks most likely to happen in the next two days because after that it might be too late for Anand to script a comeback.
