BOYLSTON CHESS CLUB
GRAND PRIX JULY 2014
IN 2 SECTIONS
OPEN (PREMIER)
NM Siddharth Arun was undefeated with 3.5/4 to capture
clear 1st place in BCC GP, for a rating of +5 to 2250.
3 TIE FOR 2ND
MIT student Yang Dai shared 2-4th place with Jason Tang
and Nathan Smolensky, each scoring 3 points out of 4.
Yang Dai holds the fort vs Jason Tang, in Round 4: draw!
Mark Robert Neale plays MACA President and Chess
Horizons Editor, Nathan Smolensky in Round 2.
Mark "oopsed" a rook and Nathan collected the full point.
In spite of this, Mark earned a +60 to 1701 rating.
Nathan, once over 2000, is climbing back with a +26 to 1963 rating.
Not, bad for a very busy individual, who wears lots of hats.
(Here he is not wearing a hat, as one can see!)
5-7th
Andrew Hoi, center stage, engages Loring Lauretti in Round 2.
Andrew scored 2.5 points; Loring went 2 for 4 with a
+59 to 1897 rating.
Michelle Chen is back, after a long absence
from the BCC. She scored 2.5 points to share
5-7th place and a +9 to 2017 rating.
Welcome back Michelle!
(Yes, I should have removed the bottle of
water from the frame, but sometimes
a photographer should be as unobtrusive
as possible during play. If this were Hollywood, I
would, for sure, have re-moved the bottle.
I offer my apologies to Michelle and
the viewing audience.)
Brandon Wu, on the move vs Conway Xu, in Round 4.
This game was drawn! Brandon scored 2.5 points
for a +16 to 1926 rating.
(background): Mark Neale plays Michael Yu.
U1800 SECTION
David Zhu Sun scored 3 points to share 1-2nd place,
and earned a +94 to 1523 rating. Bravo, David Zhu Sun!
Will Wisdom, white, vs Ned Kerwin, in Round 2.
Ned won this game and went on to score 3 points for a
share of 1-2nd place, and a +35 to 1489 rating.
Bravo Ned! (background): Neil Gurram v Ahaan Rungta;
Derek Chubo Zhao v Alex Brown. Will broke even
with 2 for 2.
Steve Stepak shared 3-4th place with
a 2.5 out of 3 performance and a
+10 to 1617 rating.
CHESS LESSON BY A YOUNG LAD
This time, the teacher learned a lesson:
Playing opening moves by rote is not a good
idea. [I had a strong advantage for the taking
out of the opening by an inaccuracy which
only a master might have normally detected.
I didn't even take the time to consider it!
With this, I proceeded to wreck the position
and my young opponent had a won endgame
for the taking. He didn't trade down fast enough
and I caught him with a perpetual check draw.]
A credible performance by an 8 yr old: 2.5/3
and a +59 to 1438 rating.
2 NEW FACES AT THE BCC
Bernardo Iglesias, event TD plays a side game with
newcomer Raymond Xu who has a provisional rating
of 801. Welcome, Raymond!
William Shand from Colorado via Harvard Summer School,
engages Jackson Bogdan Parker in Round 2.
Welcome William and welcome back Jackson!
VETERANS DUKE IT OUT
In the red cap, playing white: Harold Dondis, Esq; on the
right, playing the black pieces: Leonid Bondar from the USSR.
This time, Soviet chess training prevailed.
SERIOUS CHESS JUNIORS
No. 1, 7 yr old in MA Derek Jin (1572) plays black vs
11 yr old Michael Yu (1757). This time age had its
advantages. Michael won the game.
[Derek is ranked No. 12 in the USA, and Michael is 42nd
in their respective age categories.]
SOUTHERN INDIA AT THE BCC
High Schooler Ahaan Rungta plays black vs
MIT undergraduate Neil Gurram in Round 2.
In this game, white prevailed.
(background): Alex Brown v Derek Chubo Zhao;
David Katzman v Boshen Li.
GP's YOUNGEST PLAYER
6 yr old David Katzman plays black vs
Boshen Li. David got a one-point bye good
for the tally in the GP standings. Boshen picked
up one win and a full point bye, good for 2 points.

When you need a helping hand, chessically speaking, who are you going to call? Why, the chess correspondent of The Times of course.

I gather RDK has been covering exchange sacs over the last week or so.  ... Rxc3s in Sicilians, ... Rxf3s , Gazza’s Rxb7 against Shirov to name but a few. I was just about to get around to that last one, funnily enough.

White to play
Kasparov - Shirov, Horgen 1994

My favourite from Ray’s bunch is Benko - Keres, Los Angeles 1963. An ISE and a rook ending. What’s not to like?
